What to Expect During Your Horse Trek to Eagle Hunter’s Home
This is an adventure that puts you right at the heart of the region’s culture and natural beauty.
Your horse trek takes you from the wild horse reserve at Hustain Nuruu to the Altai Mountains in the far west of Mongolia. Riding days last up to six hours, and you’ll travel with local horsemen who know both the land and the horses. Along the way, you’ll sleep in traditional gers and meet the Kazakh and Uriankhai communities who live in these mountains.
You’ll be in the saddle shortly after you land in Bayan Ulgii, and the trail leads past ancient historical sites on the way to Eagle Hunter’s Home. Once there, you’ll watch a game of kuk-bar, a tug-of-war on horseback, and listen to folk music performed by local people.
Terrain
You’ll ride along a ridgeline of the Mogoit Pass at 2,700 metres, with views of the Altai Mountains, before dropping into the Sagsai River Valley. A little-used trail then leads to Chihertei Lake at 2,600 metres, winding through glacial boulders and moraines. Mongolia’s highest peak, Khuiten Uul, rises above 4,300 metres in the same province.
Climate
This tour takes place during the summer months, so you don’t have to worry about extreme cold. However, the evenings can get chilly, and even chillier the higher you go. So, pack for warmth, but don’t worry too much about freezing temperatures.
Wildlife
There is an abundance of wildlife in this part of the world, including the wild horses of Hustain Nuruu. Other species to look out for include Mongolian gazelles, red foxes, demoiselle cranes, and Altai snowcocks. The wild horses are Przewalski’s horses, known as takhi in Mongolia, and conservationists began reintroducing them to the park in 1992.
Culture
This region of Asia is rich in history and culture, and we aim to show you as much of it as your schedule allows. You’ll watch kuk-bar, an ancient Kazakh horseback game in which teams of riders battle for a goat carcass, a game also known as kokpar or kok-boru. The Uriankhai, who have lived in western Mongolia since the 16th century, show you their ancient compound bows and bone-tipped arrows. Inside Kazakh homes, handmade wall hangings called tuskiiz decorate the walls and serve as talismans for the household.
Travel in Style
We’ve got your travel arrangements covered from day one. As well as our beautiful horses, you can expect the expertise of trained horsemen, attentive crews, and jeep transfers.
Your Accommodations
You’ll sleep in traditional gers throughout your trek, starting at Hustain Nuruu and then in camps beside lakes and rivers on the way to the Altai Mountains. Each ger has a round wooden frame covered in thick felt, with a ring at the top, called a toono, that lets in light and fresh air.
On day seven, you’ll visit a Kazakh family whose home is decorated with traditional, handmade wall hangings. After you fly back to Ulaanbaatar, you’ll relax at your hotel with a glass of wine before a farewell dinner.
