What to Expect During Gobi Desert Holidays

It’s our mission to ensure you get to see everything this vast wilderness has to offer. The 10-day itinerary is ambitious and packed with activities, so you’ll never be short of things to do or see.

The Gobi is the fifth-largest desert in the world, but most of it is rock and gravel, which makes its towering dunes even more special. You’ll head off the beaten path through Gobi Gurvan Saikhan, Mongolia’s largest national park, and Ikh Nart Nature Reserve, where argali, the world’s largest wild sheep, roam the granite outcrops. National Park rangers will be on hand to explain what you’re seeing.

The star of the show is Khongoryn Els, one of the largest dunes in the country, which rise up to 300 metres and hum when the wind shifts the sand. You can take a Bactrian camel ride nearby, hop on an ATV in the remote areas, or ride a mountain bike or motorbike near camp. Then you’ll return to a private ger with its own cultural theme and traditional decoration.

Terrain

The Gurvan Saikhan Mountains are 2,846 metres at their highest point, right alongside open desert plains and rolling dunes. Deep, narrow gorges cut through the rock, and the unusual formations look as if they belong on another planet. It’s a landscape of real variety, so keep your camera handy.

Climate

The Gobi is a cold desert, which means big swings in temperature. Summers can be very hot, while winters can drop as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius. Pack layers either way, because temperatures change quickly between day and night.

Wildlife

Gobi Gurvan Saikhan is home to more than 50 mammal species, ranging from graceful goitered gazelles to the elusive snow leopard. You may also spot khulan, the Mongolian wild ass, wandering the semi-desert. Golden eagles also patrol the skies over the desert.

Culture

Nomadic herders still call the Gobi home, and about 30 percent of Mongolians still live this way. In Ikh Nart Nature Reserve, around 10 families move their animals with the seasons, and you’ll find ancient petroglyphs and burial mounds among the rocks. Herders breed Bactrian camels mainly for transport, so you may see them at work.

Travel in Style

Gobi Gurvan Saikhan alone stretches 380 kilometres from east to west, so comfort on the road matters. That’s why you’ll travel in luxury vehicles, with our team taking care of every mile. Along the way, you’ll enjoy a range of culinary delights.

Your Accommodations

After a day of exploring, you’ll return to a private ger camp, where each ger has its own cultural theme and traditional decoration. A ger is the portable home of Mongolia’s nomads. The whole thing, including furniture and stove, can be carried by just three camels.
